GENERAL PERMIT 6

General Permit 6 was originally issued under the IDOT Floodway construction program. The permit authorized construction of boat launching facilities on all rivers lakes and streams, except those in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

The special conditions are:

  • The ramp shall not extend into the navigation channel of a navigable waterway or in any way interfere with navigation.
  •
The boat launching facility must be designed in such a way as to minimize any obstruction to normal or flood flows.
  •
The width of the ramp shall not exceed 30 feet nor 50% of the length of the landowner's shoreline.
  •
The ramp must be aligned so as not to cross the projection of property lines into the waterway unless a written agreement to do so is obtained from the adjacent property owner(s).
  •
Except for the placement of base material (not to exceed a six inch depth) no fill material may be placed above the normal water line in conjunction with the construction of the boat launch facility. If material is excavated to construct the facility, it shall be deposited in a way which will not obstruct flood flows.
  •
The placement of riprap or other bank stabilization measures associated with the construction of the facility shall be limited to only that necessary to protect the facility.
  •
If cofferdams are necessary for the construction of the boat launching facility, materials used must be clean and non-polluting. All materials must be removed and the area returned to pre-existing grades where possible.

The revised general permit will be applicable under Parts 3700 and 3704 and will have similar conditions to those listed above. For projects which meet these conditions, the processing time is reduced. For projects not meeting these requirements, substantial additional documentation may be required and processing time will increase. In either case a completed application for permit form and project plans should be submitted.
