ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEWS

COMPLETED

 

Project reviews completed from July 15 to August 15 are listed below. These projects have been screened through the internal environmental review process for potential impacts on wetlands, threatened and endangered species, and cultural and archaeological resources etc. These projects do not meet the criteria for significant actions as defined in the environmental review process and may proceed.

 

Sangchris Lake State Park

56161 - A local utility firm is acquiring 50' wide utility easement on the north side of the Rt. 104 R.O.W. The utilities currently being proposed will be bored under any Departmental waters and easements. Project was submitted for review on 7-13-98.

 

Sam Dale State Park

55806 - This project will replace old play equipment on a 130' x 50' site within the park. The new equipment will be located either near the site concession area or between the swim beach parking lot and the playground. The sites are presently turf grass with no tree removal will be necessary. Project was submitted for review on 8-5-98.

 

Giant City State Park

 

55805 - This project will replace old play equipment on a 130' x50' site within the park. The new equipment will be located in the picnic area near shelter No. 3. The area is presently in turf grass and no tree removal will be necessary. Project was submitted for review on 5-6-98.

 

Franklin Creek Nature Preserve

 

56163 - This project involves the removal of surface debris from a wooded area at the site. Access will be through an old access lane that is presently overgrown with non-native woody species. All surface material, junk, and associated debris will be removed by a contractor using dump trucks, backhoes, and bobcats. Material to be removed includes appliances, glass, wood, cars, and other buried material. After the debris removal erosion netting, critical seeding and some regrading of the surface will be done to recreate the natural topography of the area. Project was submitted for review on 7-15-98.

 

Beaver Dam State Park

56088 - This project will widen, level, and rebuild the lake trail at the site. The trail will be widened not to exceed 6.5' and all materials scraped from the trail will be used to level the new trail. Project was submitted for review on 7-9-98.

 

North Point Marina

 

56089 - This project entails the construction of a 280' x 180' heated storage building for indoor boat storage within the existing parking lot at the marina's northwest area. The building will have metal roof and siding with natural gas and water lines extended to it. The aggregate surfaced parking lot west of IDNR's maintenance building will also be expanded. Project was submitted for review on 7-10-98.

 

Cave in Rock State Park

 

55632 - This project will construct a new shower building, rehabilitate the campground electrical system, install five new vault toilets, two new playground sets, improve the trail to the cave, and make miscellaneous improvements to improve the access to the facilities. ADA improvements will take place at the following areas: 1)Campground, 2) Restaurant and Cabin area, 3) Park Office, 4) Site Office, 5) Scenic View Picnic Shelter, 6) Boat Launch parking area. All of the construction will occur in the day use and campground areas of the park and no tree removal will be necessary. Project was submitted for review on 7-2-98

 

Kankakee River State Park

 

50675 - This project entails the demolition of 28 single stall and 2 double stall vault toilet buildings at the site and their replacement with 17 new IDNR standard masonry vault toilet buildings. Project was submitted for review on 2-9-98.

 

Dog Island Wildlife Management Area

 

55097 - This project involves prescribed burning to maintain herbaceous cover in the woodland as habitat for the swamp rabbit. Approximately three miles of permanent firebreaks 20' wide, will be established around old fields and hardwood stands. Whenever possible, existing trails, roads and natural barriers will be utilized. Some hand cutting of less than 4" dbh will occur and these will be used for wildlife brush piles. Project was submitted for review on 6-16-98.

 

Trail of Tears State Park

 

This project will replace old, outdated play equipment at the site. The new play equipment will be located in the picnic area adjacent to the site of the old equipment. The new area will be approximately 50' x 130' in size and is presently in turf grass. No tree removal will be required. Project was submitted for review on 7-6-98.

 

Morrison Rockwood

 

55798 - A newly acquired area at this site will be improved to accommodate waterfowl. The area consists of a converted wetland that has been filled in with dredge materials for the last several years. The area will be cleaned and the levees raised with the excavated material. Nesting islands will also be created and stoplog structures will be added to control water levels. Project was submitted for review on 6-29-98.

 

Green River State Conservation Area

 

55801 - This project involves the demolition of an open faced building at the Sand Prairie Habitat Area. The lumber will be salvaged and undesirable materials will be burned. A contractor will be hired to either bury or haul away the concrete floor. Project was submitted for review on 7-2-98.

 

Big River State Park

 

27294 - The existing boat launch at the site is in need of extensive repairs. The existing ramp is to be removed and replaced with a single lane new ramp. The parking lot will be paved and striped and security lighting installed. Riprap will be placed adjacent to the new ramp along with the seeding of any disturbed areas. Project was submitted for review on 4-11-96.

 

Green River State Conservation Area -Notice of Significant Action

 

53345 - No decision has been reached within the Department concerning the prairie and wetland restoration project at Green River Conservation Area. The project will be resubmitted in greater detail and published in a later edition of the Environmental Reporter. The public comment period will be reopened and an extension granted to ensure that all comments will be received before any decision is made.
