ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEWS COMPLETED
Project reviews completed from August 15 to September 15 are listed below. These projects have been screened through the internal environmental review process for potential impacts on wetlands, threatened and endangered species, and cultural and archaeological resources etc. Through the review process it was determined that environmental impacts have been kept to a minimum and mitigated as necessary and that they do not meet the criteria for significant actions as defined in the environmental review process and may proceed. All of these projects are in compliance with the Endangered Species Protection Act, Natural Areas Preservation Act, Interagency Wetlands Policy Act and cultural resource statutes.

  • Kaskaskia Biological Station
    0005067 - This project involves the renovation of site buildings and other rehabilitation activities at the site. Building renovation items include new windows and gutters, painting, installation of work benches, bathroom and office additions, insulation, siding, wiring, and relocation of the furnace and water heater. Site rehabilitation activities will include construction of a new concrete boat ramp, additional rock added to ramp approaches and other roadways at the site, drain replacement at the overflow spillway and rip rap added. Project was submitted for review on 6-22-00.
  • Frank Holten State Park
    0005077 - This project provides for the replacement of the Whispering Willow Lake bridge at the site. Development items include: two pedestrian walkways on either side of the bridge, new utility conduit, rip rap, concrete surfaced approaches, and site grading and mulching/ seeding of disturbed areas. Project was submitted for review on 6-22-00.
  • Kankakee River State Park
    0005669 - This project provides for improvements to the existing flush toilet building located south of the park office. Items include: installation of approximately 150' of new underground electric line, replacement of the existing over head electric line, and construction of a 3' by 12' extension to the existing side walk around the vending machines at the building. Project was submitted for review on 7-27-00.
  • Jim Edgar Panther Creek SFWA
    0005152 - This project entails the construction of an office building for site and district staff with a visitor center facility included in the work. The new building will be located in the vicinity of the present site office. Project was submitted for review on 7-16-00.
  • Giant City State Park
    0005057 - This project will renovate the Indian Creek Hiking Trail at the site. Work items will include filling in eroded and gullied sections of trail, installing water diversion berms, reinforcement of the tread way and installation of 5 small footbridges. Project was submitted for review on 7-10-00.
  • Big Bend State Wildlife Area
    0004462 - Due to the increase in traffic resulting from our upland and forest game hunting programs at the site the Whiteside County Highway Department has asked us to upgrade Van Damme Road. Work items will include ditch improvements, clearing, culvert replacement, base improvements, and the addition of an A-3 surface treatment. Project was submitted for review on 6-18-00.
  • Mason State Tree Nursery
    0005667 - This project provides for the demolition and removal of the existing 60' x 40' plant processing and storage building, the construction of a new Cooler Box facility near the same location, and the expansion of the existing Seed Cleaning building and metal drying bins. Associated construction items include; concrete slabs, underground utilities, road and parking renovations and expansions, site grading and drainage improvements, concrete curbing and sidewalks, sighting and landscaping.   • Jake Wolf Fish Hatchery
    0005666 - This project provides for the resurfacing and upgrading of all road and parking area facilities at the site. Development items include: new bituminous concrete surfacing, re-striping all parking spaces, the reconstruction of 2' wide aggregate road shoulders, site grading and drainage improvements, signage, culvert replacement, erosion control measures, seeding, mulching, and landscaping. Project was submitted for review on 7-31-00.
  • Green River State Wildlife Area
    0005062 - This project will entail the following improvements to site facilities to comply with ADA compliance standards. Repositioning of counter and sink in the office/ service center, renovation to restroom, provide proper access to hunter check station and picnic shelter, accessible grills, picnic tables and water hydrants, improvement to vault toilets, and accessible paths and trails. Project was submitted for review on 7-6-00.
  • Eagle Creek Resort
    0005068 - This project will include new docking facilities for resort guests. A minimum of 40 new spaces will be created directly off of the main body of Lake Shelbyville in two small inlets immediately east of the swimming pool. Other work items will include the dredging of the inlet, sheet piling and shoreline protection, access walks to the lodge and landscaping. Project was submitted for review on 7-20-00.
  • Eagle Creek Resort
    0004460 - This project will provide for the removal and trimming of trees from two ridges between the lodge and the lake in order to create scenic vistas fro the pool area and dining room at the lodge. Project was submitted for review on 6-19-00.
  • Mermet Lake
    0001995 - This project will expand permanent blind hunting opportunities at the site by adding 10 new blinds in area #1 for hunting season. One of the blinds will be accessible for the disabled. The blinds will be built of treated lumber and sit on wooden posts. Mowers and hand tools will be used to clear brushy openings around the new blinds. Project was submitted for review on 3-14-99.
  • Woodyard State Natural Area
    0003300 - This project is for the borrow area that is required to obtain the fill material needed for the previously approved dam construction and raising of the entrance road. The borrow will be taken from an open crop field. After the material is removed, the area will be regraded and the remaining topsoil will be spread over the area. Project was submitted for review on 4-27-00.
  • Tunnel Hill State Trail
    0005665 - The Saline Valley Conservancy District has requested permission to place a master meter vault on the Tunnel Hill State trail south of Harrisburg at the intersection of Rt. 45 and Liberty Road. The facility will be located underground and will consist of a 24" access vault and a 4' diameter manhole. Other improvements will include miscellaneous valves and a telephone pole with a transmitting antenna. Project was submitted for review on 7-30-00.
  • White Pines State Park
    0005540 - This project will replace the underground electrical service at the site. The new service will follow and existing trail and be trenched along its edge as to not disturb the trail or existing vegetation. The line will be bored under roads and parking lots. Project was submitted for review on 8-2-00.
  • Des Plaines Conservation Area
    0003297 - This is a prairie restoration project in which the Department will use its hydro axe to clear encroaching woody vegetation from the Des Plaines Dolomite Prairie, the Frontage Road Prairie, and the transitional area in between these two areas. The work will be performed during extremely dry or frozen ground conditions with the work being monitored by the District Heritage biologist. Project was submitted for review on 4-27-00.
  • Rock Cut State Park
    0005078 - This project entails the installation of a 6" perforated corregated polyethylene pipe encased in a fabric envelope in the sand under drain of the Pierce Lake Dam. The sand under drain was blocked by approximately 8' of overburden during the emergency spillway rehabilitation project in 1989 and is ceasing to function. Project was submitted for review on 6-28-00.
  • North Point Marina
    0004453 - This project will involve the installation of two new 42" culverts to intercept surface flood waters as they flow from Spring Bluff Nature Preserve onto and across North Point Marina property. The inlet for the culverts will be in a ditch along Marina Drive, just west of the north beach parking lots. The pipes will run north to an outlet into Prairie Harbor. Project was submitted for review on 7-2-00.
  • I & M Canal 0004285 - This project involves the installation of six 4" fiber optic cables underneath the Canal. The installation will be by directional bore. This project is in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation's plans to construct a new bridge over the Illinois River. Project was submitted for review on 6-30-00.
  • Kankakee River
    0004456 - In cooperation with the Kankakee River Conservancy District, the Department is repositioning large trees that have fallen into the main stream channel due to erosion and have become public safety hazards. The trees will be positioned and anchored to the stream bank to deter erosion. Any material that cannot be anchored to the banks will be removed and place in a disposal site outside of the floodway. Project was submitted for review on 5-15-00.
  • Donnelly / DePue
    40986 - This project involves the installation of a pump station and the rejuvenation of an existing drainage ditch at the site. The material removed from the drainage ditch will be used to rehabilitate the levees that have eroded in spots. Project was submitted for review on 4-9-97.
  • Giant City State Park
    0005893 - This project will replace playground equipment at the class A campground and at Picnic Shelter #3. Other improvements at the two sites will include concrete sidewalks, benches, fall zone areas, and edging. Project was submitted for review on 8-10-00.
  • Horseshoe Lake (Alexander Co.)
    0005892 - This project will replace old, unsafe play equipment at the picnic area located next to the site office. Additional improvements will include a resilient fall zone, sidewalk connections to existing parking areas and a bench. Project was submitted for review on 8-10-00.
  • Union County Conservation Area
    0003355 - This project involves the construction of low levees across swales in existing agricultural fields. These levees will create shallow water wetlands that will be flooded using existing pumps and wells. In addition, borrow will be obtained from a low lying field and placed in an existing moist soil unit in an attempt to seal leaks that are drying the unit. Project was submitted for review on 5-9-00.
  • Mississippi River Area
    0006465 - This project entails the demolition of four cement toilet buildings at the site. The pits will be filled, the ground leveled and the demolished materials removed from the site. Project was submitted for review on 8-28-00.
  • Shelbyville State Fish & Wildlife Area
    0001838 - This project involves the construction of a levee across the mouth of a ditch and install a permanent pump station that will flood both the Carr Bottoms and the Jonathon Creek areas at the site. Drainage pipes will be installed within the levee. A short ditch will be cut from the north end of the backwater slough to flood the low areas within the center of Carr Bottoms. Project was submitted for review on 3-10-00.
