Using Landsat satellite imagery, DNR
scientists have compiled a comprehensive database of the state's surface cover.
The data delineates natural features and artificial structures at a level of
detail appropriate for regional analyses.
CTAP staff have analyzed this data and published it in Illinois Land Cover, An Atlas. The report inventories land cover on both the state and the county level, and includes maps and county rankings for each of the seven land cover categories: cropland, open water, forest/woodland, grassland, wetland, barren/exposed land and urban/built-up land.
The companion CD-ROM allows users to view the land cover data and maps on a geographic basis or, if their computer has at least 16 megabytes of RAM, to display and manipulate the data. Users with access to ARC/INFOTM software may load the land cover data directly and create specialized coverages. The landcover data will be updated every three to five years.
The Land Cover Atlas and companion Land Cover CD Rom are execellent tools for land planners, scientists and others interested in the diverse character of Illinois land cover. The Land Cover Wall Map is an excellent tool for both children and adults. All three products are available on request by contacting the .
