Giant City State Park Visitor Center and Schedule of Events

Site Map | Giant City State Park

Located in Southern Illinois Shawnee National Forest just outside of Carbondale, Illinois, Giant City State Park is surrounded by enormous sandstone bluffs and oak-hickory woodlands. The 4000+ acre park famous for its abundance of plants - especially wildflowers, wildlife and spectacular scenery is located in Jackson and Union Counties off Illinois Route 13, 10 miles from Carbondale, IL.

Once a lowland plain, this area slowly emerged from the sea which formed the northern edge of the present Gulf of Mexico. Native Americans probably inhabited the area as early as 400 B.C. Shelter bluffs, otherwise known as rock shelters, have revealed artifacts of early Native American life. Civil War era rock carvings suggest this was a popular haunt during the time period. The name "Giant City" is derived from an area in the park where giant rock formations create walls so perfect that they seem almost man-made. The sections appear to form "streets or alleys" resembling a "giant city".

Found at the highest point in the park, is a stone-and-timber lodge surrounded by 34 cabins. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930's, it is in perfect keeping with the spirit of the park. Multi-hued sandstone and white oak timber were two of the native building materials used during construction.

The lodge, which contains many of the original oak furnishings, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It features a great room lobby with a massive stone fireplace. The main floor or the balcony surrounding the lobby are both perfect locations for relaxing after a full day of park activities.

We invite you to enjoy a meal and Southern Illinois hospitality at its' best. The Bald Knob dining room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm Sunday and from 8:00 am until 8:30 pm Monday - Saturday. The dinner menu features our famous all-you-can eat fried chicken dinner, served family style or other specialities such as steaks, ribs, chops, fish, and seafood. On Sunday from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm the dining room only serves the family style fried chicken dinner. On weekends, reservations are recommended. Menu prices are moderate. Reservations for all other days are accepted for parties of 10 or more.

Please call 618/457-4921.

The lodge also features three meeting rooms, which can accommodate from 35 to 150 people. Your business or social function will be most welcome and will receive the attention, expertise and southern hospitality to make it a success. Please call 618/457-4921 to ask for details.
