When is the trail open?

The trail is open daily from dawn to dusk for bicycling, hiking and jogging.

What are the directions to the trail headquarters at Vienna?

FROM I-24:
Take exit #16, travel west on Il. Rt. 146 approximately (1) mile, to trail headquarters entrance, north side of Il. Rt. 146.

TRAVELING FROM THE NORTH ON I-57:
Exit onto I-24. Travel east on I-24 to exit 16. Go west on Il. Rt. 146 approximately (1) mile, to trail headquarters entrance, north side of Il. Rt. 146.

TRAVELING FROM THE SOUTH ON I-57:
Exit I-57 at exit # 30, travel east on Il. Rt. 146 approximately (14) miles to trail headquarters on north side of Il. Rt. 146.

How long is the trail and what type of surface does it have?

The trail stretches 45 miles from Harrisburg to White Hill, with a comfortable 2% grade the length of the trail. Access areas with parking, outdoor privies, drinking water and a kiosk with information are available at several communities along the trail. The trail surface is a compacted limestone screening, suitable for hiking and bicycling. This surface is generally suited for wide or narrow bicycle tires - although some riders with narrow tires have commented that during wet weather the surface softened and their narrow bike tires sunk in causing difficulty.

What is the most popular section of the trail?

The 9.3 mile section from Tunnel Hill to Vienna is a very scenic section and has several unique features including the 543 foot long tunnel and Breeden Trestle, the longest and highest trestle on the trail (450 long x 90 feet tall). It is a downhill ride from Tunnel Hill to Vienna!

Where is the nearest campground?

There are no camping facilities on the trail. However, for information about nearby campgrounds please refer to the “Facilities” section of the site brochure posted on the IDNR website.
