Gifford Pheasant Habitat Area Hunter Fact Sheet
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is responsible for the preservation and restoration of wildlife habitat and for providing hunting opportunity for the residents of the state. Gifford Pheasant Habitat Area, developed with the cooperation of the Champaign County Pheasants Forever Chapter, provides for high quality permanent grassland habitat for the ring-necked pheasant and other grassland dependent wildlife species. Gifford Pheasant Habitat Area is a satellite of Kickapoo State Recreation Area.
LOCATION: This area is 2.0 miles west and 3/4 mile north of Gifford, in north east Champaign county. Access is 3/4 mile north of state route 136 on county road 2100 east.
DESCRIPTION: TOTAL ACRES: 100.5 HUNTABLE
ACRES: 100 WATER ACRES: 0.5 TIMBERED
OPEN ACRES: 96.0
The total area of the site is 100.5 acres. 100 acres is open to hunting. Cover types include smooth brome grass, alfalfa, red clover ( 58.0 acres), Prairie grasses and forbs (26.0 acres), old field ( 16.0 acres).
SEASONS, HOURS, LIMITS:
Pheasant, rabbit and quail hunting is by free Permit Only issued through Springfield. Permits are issued for the first and second day of the statewide upland game season and on each subsequent Wednesday and Saturday in November and on each Thursday and Sunday in December, through December 24. Hunting hours are until 4:00pm and limits are statewide.
OTHER SPECIAL REGULATIONS:
Grassland habitat renovation will be occurring on the area.
These activities are designed to improve pheasant habitat.
