NAME: MORAINE VIEW STATE RECREATION AREA

LOCATION: The Moraine View State Recreation Area (MVSRA) is located 5 miles northeast of LeRoy in southeastern McLean County

DESCRIPTION:

The MVSRA is characterized by major habitat areas consisting of forest (27%); shrubs (24%); grassland (26%) and cropland (23%).

SEASONS, HOURS, LIMITS:

Online, Free Site Hunting Permits - East Central Illinois Sites

"Free Site Hunting Permits" are required, and are available online from the IDNR homepage - http://www.dnr.illinois.gov. Navigate to "hunting /trapping" and then Upland Game to apply for Upland Game Permits. Navigate to public hunting areas to print all other site hunting permits. Hunters will be required to return their harvest card (Upland Game permits) via mail, or harvest date (all others) via this website, prior to February 15th each year. Failure to submit the card or data will result in loss of hunting privileges for the following year.

SITE REGULATIONS:

1. The controlled Pheasant season opens from October 31 to December 30. Controlled Pheasant hunting is open on Wednesday through Sunday (closed on Monday and Tuesday for rabbit hunting. See Rabbit season.) Check-in time is 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.  Standby hunters are accepted by lottery drawing after 8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. (noon). Hunting hours are 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Hunters must use size 5,6,7,71/2,9 lead or 3,4,5,6,7 steel shot.  Pheasant(s) must be tagged with a state tag prior to removal from the area. Hunters under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Non-hunters are not allowed in the upland game management units, except when assisting with handicap hunters. The Youth “Only” pheasant hunt (hunters ages 10-15) occurs the first Sunday following the opening of the statewide pheasant season. Youth hunters may hunt for free when accompanied with a paying adult on the last Sunday in November and December.  Daily limit is 2 pheasants either sex. Pheasants  Only! No other species may be taken during the controlled pheasant hunt.
2. Pheasant (cleanup) season opens from the end of the Controlled Pheasant season to the close of the statewide pheasant season (North Zone – Jan. 8th). Hunting hours are from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Only male pheasants may be harvested. Statewide daily limit applies.
3. Dove season opens from September 1, to the second Sunday in October. Dove hunters are accepted by lottery drawing at 11:00 a.m. at the Concession Area each day September 1-5, as needed. Hunting hours are 12:00 p.m. (noon) to 5:00 p.m. Hunting hours change to statewide hunting hours after Sept. 5. Non-toxic shot (size 6,7,71/2, 8, 9 steel or bismuth) is required on Dove Management Fields during the entire dove season. Hunters are required to check-in and check-out to report harvests the first five days of the dove season. Statewide daily limit applies.
4. Squirrel season opens from August 1 to February 15, except closed during controlled pheasant season, archery deer season and late winter firearm deer season. Hunters may only use shotgun. Statewide hunting hours and daily limit applies
5. Rabbit season is open on Monday and Tuesday (closed on Wednesday through Sunday, during controlled Pheasant Season). Hours are 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Rabbit season opens daily after Controlled Pheasant season to the end of the statewide rabbit season (North Zone – Jan. 8th). Hunters must use size 5,6,7,71/2, 9 lead or 3,4,5,6,7 steel shot.  Hunters under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Non-hunters are not allowed in the upland game management units except when assisting with handicap hunters. Statewide daily limit applies.
6. Woodcock season is open according to the federal regulations through two days before the opening of Controlled Pheasant season.  Hunting hours are sunrise to 4:00 p.m.  Federal daily limit applies.
7. Raccoon (hunting) season open the second Monday in December through the close of raccoon hunting season except closed during late winter deer season. Hunters are accepted by lottery drawing at 10:30 a.m. the first Monday in December.  Each hunter drawn will be given two days to hunt. Hunting parties are limited to four hunters. All hunters are required to have a free site hunting permit. Raccoon hunting is open the second Monday in December through the close of raccoon hunting season except closed during late winter deer season. Hunting hours are night hunting “only”. Statewide daily limit applies.
8. Furbearer (trapping) season open from November 5 to February 20. Muskrat, Mink, Raccoon, Opossum, Striped Skunk, Weasel, Red Fox, Badger, and/or Beaver are furbearer of Illinois. Trappers are accepted by lottery drawing at 10:30 a.m. at the Park Office on the first Tuesday before the opening of the trapping season. No more than two persons my enter drawing on a single card. Trappers may use only Egg Traps D-P (Dog Proof) traps, box traps, cage traps and traps of similar design may be used for land sets. Water set may be used. Statewide trapping season dates (North Zone), hours and daily limit applies.
9. Falconry season, hunting using a bird of prey, opens October 1 and ends two days before Controlled Pheasant season.  Hunting hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Falconry hunters may harvest pheasants and/or rabbits. Falconry hunters must report harvest by December 1.  Statewide daily limit applies.
10. Hunters engaged in pheasant and rabbit hunting must wear a cap and upper outer garment of solid blaze orange (at least 400 square inches).    
11. Hunting is restricted to those portions of the area posted as open to hunting.
12. All hunting must be with shotgun, bow and arrow, or falconry.

OTHER FACILITIES AVAILABLE: Fishing and boating are provided on the lake. Eight picnic areas with tables and fireplaces are available. A large camping area with gravel pads, electricity, showers, flush toilets and a sanitation station for trailers is present. 13 miles of horseback trails are also available. Handicap facilities are also available.
