A Tranquil setting, flowing rivers, and natural prairire land
- the Des Plaines Fish & Wildlife Area has it all. Visitors
will delight in the abundance of wildlife, restful picnicn areas
and variety of sportfishing species. Farmland and woodland, prairie
and swamp, still water and shoreline offer unlimited opportunities
for nature lovers and sportsmen.
Located ten miles south of joliet and 55 miles southwest of Chicago
in WIll County, the site is accessible from I-55 at mile marker
#241.
Picnic areas complete with tables, grills and drinking water allow
for a restful break from hunting, fishing or hiking.
Open water and ice fishing provide panfish, catfish, and good
bass fishing. The Kankakee River borders the site on the south
with 3 miles of shoreline providing access to boating enthusiast
and excellent walleye and northern pike fishing. A public boat
launch with 3 paved ramps is available on the Kankakee River for
boating on the river or its backwaters.
Pheasant hunting is the most popluar choice for sportsmen at Des
Plaines, and the largest pheasant hunting (by permit only) facility
in the state is located at the site. For variety, however, there
are unlimited numbers of deer, rabbit and dove. Eighty acres of
the Des Plaines Wildlife Area make up a dedicated nature preserve
which contains many remnants of the natural prairie of years past.

Heritage Bluff Golf Course

Park District, located 1/4 mile West of I-55 at Exit 247. Designed
by Dick Nugent, the 18 hole course features bent grass fairways,
a practice range, and a clubhouse with complete dining and golf
shop facilities. it was named to the Top Ten list of new public
golf courses in the USA for 1994 by Golf Digest magazine. Open April through November.
