The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for providing outdoor recreation opportunities for the residents of this state. The use of wildlife populations, whether it be for hunting or observation, is one aspect of this role. This Hunting Fact Sheet is provided to insure that regulations governing the use of our wildlife resources are available and understood. In addition, it is useful in acquainting visitors with common species and habitats on the area. IN ALL CASES, ask site personnel about additional rules, regulations, and site information.

LOCATION: The Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area (SSFWA) is located 8 miles northwest of Chandlerville off Route 78. The area lies mostly in Cass and Mason counties.

DESCRIPTION: Total acres: 10,360; Huntable acres: 7,000; Water acres: 1,700; Open acres: 650; Timbered acres: 7,540

The Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area is managed primarily as a refuge for migratory waterfowl and as a public duck and goose hunting area. Upland game, forest game, and furbearer hunting is also permitted. The area is a typical bottomland complex of sloughs, backwater lakes, timbered ponds, and bottomland timber comprised largely of willow, maple, and cottonwood. Waterfowl hunting is restricted to marked blind sites and a designated walk-in area. There are approximately 60 blind sites which are drawn for on an annual basis; also approximately 500 acres are open to walk-in hunting.

Raccoon/ Opossum/ Fox/ Coyote Statewide Statewide .22 rimfire firearms permitted from sunset to sunrise. Windshield permit required. Windshield permit required.
Deer (firearm, archery) Statewide Statewide Firearm deer requires special Sanganois SFWA deer permit. Archers require windshield card.
Wild Turkey (firearm) Statewide (Spring only) Statewide Permit requirements vary. Contact site for specifics.
Wild Turkey (archery) Statewide Statewide Windshield permit required.
Crow See special rules Statewide Season is July 1 - Aug. 15 and from the day after goose season closes through March 1; non-toxic shot only. Windshield permit required.

SITE REGULATIONS:

Upland, Forest Game

  1. Dove hunter quota will be filled by drawing one hour before shooting time. Hunters must check in and out, and report their daily kill at the check station provided.
  2. Daily shooting hours shall be from 12 noon until 5 pm on September 1 - 5 and thereafter, statewide shooting hours will apply. Non-toxic shot only may be used.
  3. Hunting for squirrel, quail, rabbit, cock pheasant, deer, wild turkey, rail, woodcock, common snipe, raccoon, fox, coyote, and opossum is permitted on all project lands except in posted refuge areas and within 300 feet of any legal waterfowl blinds and areas posted as closed to deer hunting.

Waterfowl Area Restrictions

  1. All hunters using the "constructed blinds" must report to the check station located on the west side of the Illinois River, one mile north of Browning off Route 100, or to the check station at the site office 8 miles northwest of Chandlerville off Route 78, to fill out information cards and to turn in hunting licenses before proceeding to blinds.
  2. Registered blind builders desiring to claim their blinds must report to check station one hour before opening shooting time each day. Blinds not claimed by blind builders by this hour will be available for assignment on a drawing basis to other hunters until 10 am Central Standard Time. The daily drawing will be conducted at the west side and east side check stations on alternate days.
  3. Shooting hours shall be from legal opening to 1 pm (CST).
  4. Hunters must occupy blinds within one hour after registering at check station.
  5. Upon vacating blinds, hunters must report to check station within one hour. At this time, waterfowl bagged will be checked and hunting licenses returned.
  6. Bank fishing (no boat access) is permitted after 1 pm.

Walk-in Area Regulations

  1. Hunters using the walk-in area may use the check station at the headquarters area located 8 miles northwest of Chandlerville off Route 78 or the check station on the west side of the Illinois River 1 mile north of Browning off Route 100.
  2. Walk-in waterfowl hunting will be permitted in that area duly posted for this purpose.
  3. All hunters using this area must report to the check station to fill out information cards and to turn in hunting licenses or Firearm Owners Identification Cards before proceeding to the area. During the first 4 days of the season a drawing will be held 1 1/2 hours before shooting time to fill the hunter quota.
  4. Upon the completion of hunting, hunters must report to the check station within one hour.
  5. Hunting from levees is prohibited.
