NAME: WALNUT POINT STATE PARK

LOCATION: Three miles north of Oakland on County Highway 7. Also, follow direction signs from U.S. Route 36 two miles west of Newman.

DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA:

TOTAL ACRES: 671      OPEN ACRES: 10      HUNTABLE ACRES: 573      TIMBERED ACRES: 602

Walnut Point includes numerous wooded ravines on and along the upper Embarras River. Various species of mature hardwoods dominate the park’s 602 wooded acres. A 60-acre fishing lake is also on site. Other site facilities and programs are camping, picnicking, hiking and a seasonal concession operation w/ boat rental.

SITE REGULATIONS:

1. There is no check station but all hunters are required to sign in and sign out daily. This can be done at the information building located adjacent to the park office.
2. The Upper Embarras Woods Nature Preserve is closed to all hunting.
3. Squirrel and Archery Deer hunting is only allowed in the two wildlife management areas. The total acreage of these two areas, Observatory and Bower Woods, is approximately 173 acres. Directional signs to these areas start at the park’s entrance/exit road.
4. Raccoon hunting is allowed in all locations, except the nature preserve.
5. Please respect our neighbors:

   * No hunting within 100 yards of roads and residences
   * Know your location: Check signs, maps or with site personnel if you are unsure of park, wildlife management
   areas and nature preserve boundaries
   * Hunter Parking: Only use park and wildlife management area parking lots
   * Camping is not allowed in the wildlife management areas

6. Squirrel and Raccoon hunters may use shotguns or .22 rimfire firearms. Squirrel hunters may also use black powder rifles.
7. Archery Deer tree stands may be installed two weeks prior to the season start date and they must be removed no later than two weeks following the season end date.
8. Blaze Orange: Statewide regulations apply - Refer to current IDNR Hunting Digest for requirements
