Area
The Green River State Wildlife Area is a wildlife restoration
area popular among hunters, hikers, birders and other outdoor enthusiasts.
Topography of the 2,565-acre area varies from flat to gently rolling.
Swampy slough areas dominate nearly a third of the acreage, but the remaining
portions are prairie restorations, open fields, cultivated areas or timberlands.
Many of these areas have been specially planted and managed to provide
more food and cover for a variety of wildlife species. Native prairie
plants are found in many portions of the Green River Area.
Acquired by the State
of Illinois in 1940, with the assistance of funding from the Federal Aid
in Wildlife Restoration Act, Green River State Wildlife Area is located
about six miles northwest of Ohio, Illinois, off Illinois Route 26.
Facilities
Hunting:
Nearly 2,515 of Green River's 2,565 acres are open for hunting. The entire
site is huntable, except for a 50 acre restricted area around the site
residence. Hunting of pheasant, rabbit, quail, dove, squirrel, crow, fox,
raccoon, coyote, turkey, opossum, skunk and deer is allowed. Check with
the site manager for specific hunting information.

Station: A check station
is located on the main entrance road. All hunters are required to check
in before hunting and at the end of the hunt to report game taken.
Camping:
Camping spaces with vehicular access are provided. A sanitary dump station
also is available.
Equestrian
Trail: A 10-mile equestrian trail is open for public
use from April 15 to Oct. 31.
Please:
Help keep this area clean and beautiful for all to enjoy. Put all litter
in the nearest trash container.
- While groups of 25 or
more are welcome and encouraged to use the park's facilities, they are required
to register in advance with the site office to avoid crowding or scheduling
conflicts.
- At least one responsible
adult must accompany each group of 15 minors.
- Pets must be kept on
leashes at all times.
- Actions by nature can
result in closed roads and other facilities. Please call ahead to the park
office before you make your trip.
