NAME: Saline County State Fish & Wildlife Area (Glen 0. Jones Lake)

LOCATION: 5 miles Southeast of Equality, Illinois

DESCRIPTION: 

A combination of bottomland bordering the south fork of the Saline River and Shawnee Hills land bordering the Shawnee National Forest. The rugged rock hills are heavily timbered with springs, rocky creeks and the lake furnishing water for wildlife.

Total Acres: 1270, Water Acres: 105, Huntable Acres: 1000, Timber Acres: 300, Open, Cultivated or Fallow Acres: 600

AVAILABLE GAME SPECIES: 

    Deer, Quail, Woodcock, Squirrel, Rabbit , Turkey, Dove , Waterfowl

Forest game, including deer and squirrel, inhabit the timbered areas, and also use crops provided by site farming for food. Several open fields bordering the river are surrounded by brushy areas providing cover for quail and rabbits. Waterfowl also use the bottomland areas when the streams overflow and water is available. Several wood ducks nest and raise on the river, sloughs and the lake. Cover plantings have been made to reduce the size of open fields and increase small game cover.

AREA REGULATIONS:

  1. Hunting is restricted to those portions of areas posted as open to hunting.
  2. Free Site Hunting Permits (windshield cards) are required for species as noted. These are available online at www.dnr.illinois.gov. Navigate to "hunting/trapping: and then "public hunting areas" to print these permits. Hunters will be required to return to this website prior to February 15th each year to record harvest information. Failure to submit data will result in loss of hunting privileges for the following year.
  3. Hunting shall be with shotgun or bow and arrow, except squirrel hunting. Squirrel hunters may use rifles firearms north of the county road. Contact the site superintendent for specific regulations.
  4. On all DNR sites during pheasant, rabbit, quail and partridge season, hunters and trappers are required to wear a cap and upper garment of solid and vivid blaze orange of at least 400 square inches while trapping or hunting pheasant, quail, Hungarian partridge, rabbit, snipe, rail and woodcock.
  5. Dove hunting hours will be from NOON to 5:00pm opening day, Wednesdays & Saturdays ONLY. REGISTRATION WILL BEGIN AT I I:OOAM. If more than 50 hunters register by 11:30AM, a drawing will be held.
