The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for providing outdoor recreation opportunities for the residents of this state. The use of wildlife populations, whether it be for hunting or observation, is one aspect of this role. This Hunting Fact Sheet is provided to insure that regulations governing the use of our wildlife resources are available and understood. In addition, it is useful in acquainting visitors with common species and habitats on the area. IN ALL CASES, ask site personnel about additional rules, regulations, and site information.
LOCATION: The Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area (SSFWA) is located 8 miles northwest of Chandlerville off Route 78. The area lies mostly in Cass and Mason counties.
DESCRIPTION: Total acres: 10,360; Huntable acres: 7,000; Water acres: 1,700; Open acres: 650; Timbered acres: 7,540
The Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area is primarily a waterfowl management area. The site offers waterfowl, forest game and furbearer hunting with limited upland game opportunities. . The area is a typical bottomland complex of sloughs, backwater lakes, timbered ponds, and bottomland timber comprised largely of willow, maple, and cottonwood. Waterfowl hunting is restricted to marked blind sites and a designated walk-in area. There are approximately 60 blind sites which are drawn for on an annual basis; also approximately 500 acres are open to walk-in hunting.

SEASONS, HOURS, LIMITS:

SPECIAL SITE REGULATIONS:

1. Hunting for squirrel, quail, rabbit, cock pheasant, deer, wild turkey, rail, woodcock, common snipe, raccoon, fox, coyote, and opossum is permitted except in posted refuge, waterfowl rest areas or within 300 feet of any legal waterfowl blinds and areas posted as closed to deer hunting.
2. Windshield cards are available online at www.dnr.illinois.gov. Navigate to "Hunting/Trapping" and then "Public Hunting Areas" to print these permits. Hunters will be required to return to this website prior to February 15th each year to record harvest information. Failure to submit data will result in loss of hunting privileges for the following year.
3. Firearm deer hunting and Turkey Hunting permits are available through the permit Lottery System by going to http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/hunting/Pages/ApplyForDeerOrTurkeyPermit.aspx
4. Deer Hunters may leave one tree stand unattended from 9/15 – 1/31.   The stand must be tagged with the hunters name and address 

Waterfowl Area Restrictions

1. All waterfowl hunters must register at one of the two check stations.
1. Browning Check Station is located on the west side of the Illinois River, one mile north of Browning off Route 100,
2. The Chandlerville check station is located 8 miles northwest of Chandlerville off Route 78.
2. Waterfowl blinds are allocated at an annual drawing held on the last Sunday of July at the Chandlerville check station. Illinois resident Hunters must have a Illinois hunting license from the  previous year or current Illinois hunting license and Illinois State Duck Stamp and a valid Illinois Firearm Identification Card. Non-residents only need a Illinois hunting license from the previous year or current Illinois hunting license and Illinois State Duck Stamp
3. Registered blind builders must claim their blinds at one of the check stations one hour before opening shooting time each day. Blinds not claimed by blind builders by this hour will be available for assignment on a drawing basis to other hunters until 10 am Central Standard Time. The daily drawing will be conducted at the Browning and Chandlerville check stations on alternate days.
4. Shooting hours shall be from legal opening to 1 pm (CST).
5. Hunters must occupy blinds within one hour after registering at check station.
6. Hunters using the walk-in areas may use either check station, except the Baker Tract.
7. During the first 4 days of the season a drawing will be held 1 1/2 hours before shooting time to fill the hunter quota for the main walk-in area
8. Hunters using the Baker Tract walk-in area must register at the Chandlerville Check Station 1hour and 15 minutes before opening shooting time.  A drawing will be held to allocate the four hunting area’s within the Baker Tract.  The Baker Tract is closed during the Firearm deer season.
9. Upon the completion of hunting, hunters must report to the check station within one hour
10. Hunting from levees is prohibited.
11. Teal hunting is permitted; hunters must stay 200 yards apart.
12. State wide regulations apply for that portion of the Canada goose season that follows the regular duck season.
13. State wide regulations apply to the special Conservation order snow goose season that follows the regular Canada goose season.
14. No early season Canada goose hunting allowed
