Hanover Bluff State Natural Area Hunter Fact Sheet

Location:  Jo Daviess County in Hanover, immediately north of the Apple River Bridge on Rt. 84 is West Blanding Road.  Take this road ½ mile “Y” intersection of Blanding and Hanover Hills roads, turn left on Hanover Hill to parking area, ½ mile.  
Description: Total Acres: 348.75; Huntable Acreas: 332.75; Water Acres: 16; Open Grassland: 30; Timber Acres: 302.75.  The area will provide good hunting opportunities for forest game species like deer, wild turkey and squirrel.  Upland game opportunities will be limited as rabbits are the only species present in any number.  The topography is very steep, making walking difficult.
Hunting: Do not use private road on western border to access State property.  Also, there is a private residence located in this area.  Because of the close proximity to our boundary, hunting is not allowed within 100 years of the residence.  Signs have been posted defining this restriction and are shown on the site map.     

Area Regulations:

1. All statewide regulations apply. 
2. It shall be unlawful for any person to possess or to consume beer, wine, or intoxicating liquors while hunting on the area.
3. No ground fires or camping allowed.
4. Area closed to non-hunters during deer firearm seasons (Youth, Firearm, CWD and Muzzleloader) and until 1 pm during turkey firearm seasons (Youth and Spring).  Exception: supervising adult during youth seasons.
5. Hunters must obtain a Free Site Hunting Permit (Windshield Card) online at the IDNR website, http://www.dnr.illinois.gov.  This permit must be displayed and visible under the vehicle windshield and the pocket portion in possession while hunting at the site.  Hunters must report their annual harvest online by February 15 (even if the hunter did not hunt) or they forfeit hunting privileges at the site for the following year.
6. All turkey and firearm deer hunters must obtain a Special Hunt Area permit.  Special Hunt Area permits are not valid anywhere else in the county.  County permits are not valid for the Special Hunt Area.
7. For Youth Turkey and Deer seasons, only Jo Daviess County permit holders that contact the site office will be issued a youth season Free Site Hunting Permit (Windshield Card) until quotas are reached.
8. All other hunting is closed during firearm deer seasons (Youth, Firearm, CWD and Muzzleloader).  Exception: coyote may be taken by firearm deer hunters with Special Hunt Area permit. 
9. It shall be unlawful to construct or to use any tree stand that utilizes nails, screws, or wire or any device which pierces or cuts the bark of the tree on which it is installed.  Any tree stand must be portable and removed from the tree at the end of each days hunt.
