Aux Sable Access

MULTIMEDIA

Slide show of Lock #8

Historical Picture

The Aux Sable access contains three pieces of history right in the same area. Lock #8 of the Illinois & Michigan Canal, the locktender's house, and the rebuilt Aux Sable Creek aqueduct that was constructed to carry the canal over Aux Sable Creek. This access area provides a very historic and scenic starting point for any recreational endeavor along the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail. A new parking area and restrooms were added recently to make it more convenient for visiting guests. A drinking fountain is also available along with park benches to allow visitors to sit and enjoy the beauty and history that surrounds them.

Fishing

The Aux Sable access is a peaceful area, perfect for casting a line in the water. Anglers are able to fish for bass, crappie, catfish, bluegill and bullhead.

Boating

Canoeing is available for 15 miles between Channahon and Gebhard Woods. Aux Sable is the perfect half way point to either put in, take out, or just stop for lunch.

Trail Access

Located along the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail, hikers, bicyclists, and nature lovers alike, access the trail at Aux Sable. Once a four inch snow base has been established, snowmobilers also use this area to unload their snowmobile and enjoy miles of snowmobiling on the trail. Cross country skiers also take advantage of this quiet and serene access.

Camping

Primitive camping only: gear must be walked to site, no vehicular access. This site is limited to approximately five tents. Water and restroom facilities are located within walking distance. A camping permit must be obtained prior to camping at either Channahon State Park or Gebhard Woods State Park.
