Archery Deer Application

INTRODUCTION: The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is responsible for providing outdoor recreational opportunities for the residents of this State. This area is managed by the Department and the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission as a high-quality mesic upland forest, dry-mesic upland forest, wet floodplain forest and grassland area within the Glaciated Section of the Middle Mississippi Border Natural Division. The area is unique to the state and is protected by state statute as a dedicated Nature Preserve.

LOCATION: The Nature Preserve is located northwest of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus
and on the west side of Poag Road. The entrance is at the junction of Poag Road and Bohm School Road.

SETTING: The hunting area consists of 90 acres. The majority of the parcel is composed of upland woodland with several small grassland parcels interspersed on the east and west sides of the property.

GENERAL SITE REGULATIONS:

  1. All hunters must obtain a parking permit and harvest report sheet from the site office prior to archery deer hunting. Park office hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  2. Archery deer hunters must possess and display on dash of vehicle a parking permit while hunting.
  3. The harvest report sheet must be returned to the site office at the conclusion of hunting at the Nature Preserve or by January 31, or the hunter will forfeit hunting privileges at the site the following season.
  4. It is unlawful to possess or consume alcoholic beverages or leave any trash while on the Nature Preserve property.

Archery Deer

  1. A Special Permit is required to archery hunt deer. Applications are available on-line or at the Park Office. Applications must be in the Park office by close of business March 31. A drawing will be held on the first week day in April at the Park office to determine successful applicants. Application
  2. Two (2) archery hunting permits are allocated via the site drawing for each of the fourteen (14) one week
    sessions.
  3. It will be unlawful to construct or to use any tree stand using nails, screws, wire or any device which pierces or cuts the bark of the tree on which it is installed. All tree stands must be portable and are required to be removed at the end of each week. NO PERMANENT TREE STANDS ALLOWED.
  4. An antlerless deer must be harvested prior to the harvest of an antlered deer.
  5. Open during the Youth, Muzzleloader, and Late Winter Firearm Deer Seasons. All hunters must wear blaze orange as required for firearm deer hunting during these seasons.
  6. While held to a minimum, successful applicants should be aware that natural resource management activities such as prescribed burning and non-native plant control may be conducted during the archery season.
  7. Parking is limited, thus permit holders are requested to park at the designated parking location.
  8. Permits are not transferable.
  9. Statewide hunting hours are in effect.
