The Nature Preserves Commission consists of nine Illinois citizens appointed by the Governor of the State of Illinois to serve three-year, unsalaried terms. The Commissioners hold public meetings to evaluate whether sites qualify for dedication under one of the state’s programs. The Commission works closely with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and other state and local agencies as well as private groups, such as The Nature Conservancy, and Audubon Society and Natural Land Institute, to promote preservation of significant lands and oversee their stewardship, management and protection.
