Weingart Road Sedge Meadow Nature Preserve

Location and Access:

From McHenry at jct. Hwys. 31 & 120, take Hwy 120 east 1.5 miles to Chapel Hill Road, then turn and go north 2.1 miles to Bay Road, then turn and go east 0.4 mile, then take north fork in road to Weingart Road, then turn and go north 0.4 mile to Rolling Lane road, then turn and go east 0.5 mile to Pitzen Road, then north 0.35 mile. The nature preserve is to the west.

Description:

Weingart Road Sedge Meadow is located on a peninsula extending into the southwestern corner of Pistakee Lake, one of the Chain O' Lakes through which the Fox River flows. Weingart Road Sedge Meadow is dominated to a large extent by a high-quality sedge meadow community. Dominant plants of this community include tussock sedge, blue joint grass and marsh shield fern. Other common associates include water knotweed, tall swamp marigold, bog bedstraw and spotted Joe Pye weed. A few acres of high quality marsh also occur with associates of this community including common bur reed, common cattail and sweet flag.
